Networking / Online play

I am interested in helping with the project, and in particular the networking/online play.
The most basic thing should be enabling play over hamachi or LAN. Lobbies and such are of course a nifty feature but this would allow online play through simple means.

So, is there any particular reason as to why this hasn’t been implemented? What is left to be done?

I’ve only scanned through the code briefly but I thought I should ask here first.
