Stuck in version 1.1 on raspberry pi 4?

Hi,

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question. I’m running Bookworm 64 on a Raspberry Pi 4, and i installed using “sudo apt install vcmi”, however i noticed that when i run the command again i get “vcmi is already the newest version (1.1.0+dfsg-1)”. But shouldn’t this be 1.4 or 1.5 now?

My main problem is getting higher than 800x600 resolution, in VCMI Launcher the dropdown under settings isn’t showing anything else, same in game. I installed the 1.03 essentials package maually from here Mod list - VCMI Project Wiki , which game me more options in-game but they don’t do anything (resolution stays the same regardless), and VCMI Launcher still only shows 800x600 option under settings.

VCMI Launcher isn’t allowing me to make updates properly either, get errors when i run the “Download & refresh repositories”.

Should add that i don’t need to be on Bookworm if there i another OS i can install to run Heroes. And i have the GOG version of the game purchased. I simply want to run H3, however it works best!

Thank you all in advance for any answers and help.

Hello.
Version of VCMI available in Debian repository is up to distribution maintainers.
Debian generally does not provides new major versions of packages after releases, only minor updates. So yeah, bookworm will never get newer VCMI version in Debian repositories.
Debian unstable does have latest (1.5.7) version vcmi, so eventually it will get to next stable release (although by that time vcmi 1.5.7 would be ancient).

You have following options:

  • install Flatpak on your Debian system. Then you can install latest vcmi via Flatpak: Install VCMI on Linux | Flathub. Probably the easiest & fastest option.
  • install Ubuntu or its derivatives. While official Ubuntu repositories have same vcmi version as Debian, we also provide PPA with newest release: VCMI - Releases : “VCMI - Heroes3 recreated” team
  • you can also try to compile VCMI from source for your current system. However I won’t recommend this if you’re not familiar with the process.

Thank you @Ivan ! Flatpak worked like a charm! Much appriciated.

Sidenote: This answer gave me the opportunity to introduce my 6 & 8 yr old boys to internet forums, and the fact that helpful people on the internet will take the time to help complete strangers simply out of kindness (and the human itch to solve problems!). Building and installing the Raspberry Pi and various game emulators has been a project we three have been working on together
