You can use "outdated" tutorial for tortoise git I guess... I did not use tortoise git so i have no experience with that tool, though I heard some bad opinions about that one. Sourcetree is very popular on windows. Anyway, I use Sourcetree only for "overview" and to view changes. I operate on git command line to perform most actions and I am git first timer :P.

I found some time to finally complete this. It seems that tutorial will help some people: VCMI VS 2015 build tutorial
This tutorial does not contain all information from previous one, but helps to replace outdated information, and adds some more information about VCMI solution itself.

Also this release shipped with opengl32.dll, which causes game to misbehave, for example on my PC it causes problems when switching between fullscreen and windowed mode.

Technically it uses SDL 2, but I guess it uses elements from "SDL1", which are included there too, SDL 2 has hardware acceleration when all elements are SDL_Texture, the parts of VCMI code I saw use "legacy" SDL_Surface

There is performance dropdown in some cases for me (try to enter town screen, then "shake mouse" to switch between different creature slots at the bottom part of town screen). This causes FPS drop, that is noticeable when looking at animated buildings.

Anyway, VCMI rendering should be replaced at some point, as it uses old SDL 1.2.

Yeah not yet, though the number of bugs fixed after 0.98g is bigger than between any previous releases: http://bugs.vcmi.eu/changelog_page.php (and still growing)

Download libraries separately. You need boost and zlib, additionally for VCMI_client you need sdl2 and ffmpeg. Boost, sdl2 and ffmpeg are easy to download from their websites. And you can get zlib using nuget package manager shipped with visual studio 2015: https://www.nuget.org/packages/zlib/

You also need qt for launcher but I do not play with launcher project.

Not valid anymore, I believe it was issue with VCMI 0.98c, where apparently resolution change didn't work at all

About changing tier 3 and tier 6 units I mean decreasing the stats from the current value of that particular unit - when I talk about upgraded unit I refer to upgraded unit stats. Anyway, looks like upgraded level 7 is still too weak though, when looking at the cost.
