We're back with new major release!

Download VCMI 0.99

A lot of work has been done to ensure game stability. A number of "impossible" crash bugs were tracked down and fixed. This opens up chance for better multiplayer support in the future.
RMG has undergone huge improvement, it is now not only closely resembling OH3, but also works much faster. Bonus is about 150 random map templates ported from original game and fan favourites.
Pretty much every aspect has been improved. Pay close attention to spells and cheat codes. Flying spells and artifacts have been restored as well as ability icons in Creature Window. Over 1400 commits were done since previous release 0.98, which means something.

Since 0.98f over 100 bugs have been fixed. Since 0.98 it's difficult to count. For the first time in history more bugs are being fixed than reported ;)

We also have daily builds for Windows and Ubuntu daily builds up and running.

Installation

We recommend you first make a copy of clean Heroes Complete / Shadow of Death folder. Extract VCMI zip package there.
WoG is not needed. All recommended mods and files can be downloaded via Launcher included in the package.

BATTLES:
* Drawbridge mechanics implemented (animation still missing)
* Merging of town and visiting hero armies on siege implemented
* Hero info tooltip for skills and mana implemented

ADVETURE AI:
* Fixed AI trying to go through underground rock
* Fixed several cases causing AI wandering aimlessly
* AI can again pick best artifacts and exchange artifacts between heroes
* AI heroes with patrol enabled won't leave patrol area anymore

RANDOM MAP GENERATOR:
* Changed fractalization algorithm so it can create cycles
* Zones will not have straight paths anymore, they are totally random
* Generated zones will have different size depending on template setting
* Added Thieves Guild random object (1 per zone)
* Added Seer Huts with quests that match OH3
* RMG will guarantee at least 100 pairs of Monoliths are available even if there are not enough different defs

Well congratz on releasing 0.99 sadly when i tried it, it crashed so that was not fun. Full clean install and installed only hota and hd menu mod and it just crashed so am i having bad luck or is there a miss somewhere?

Just one question do you guys test if before releasing it?

My firend told me, that in version 0.99 launcher didn't launch. In daily builds version all it's ok (he has old PC with Win XP).

Restart likely wouldn't help. At least it's not help to @povelitel at all. Proper solution would be to get rid of shared memory completely here since client able to shutdown server without it.

Issue on bug tracker here: #2560

Only real workaround is start VCMI_Server.exe separately (it's will not NOT crash) and then VCMI_Client.exe with "-d" or "--donotstartserver" flag. Then client will just use what's given.

Also release shipped with SDL 2.0.3, which is not that stable. For me 2.0.4 works much better.

Also this release shipped with opengl32.dll, which causes game to misbehave, for example on my PC it causes problems when switching between fullscreen and windowed mode.

Post subject: Tried VCMI 0.99 today with some errors....
Hello

I found information about the VMCI project today, as I was looking in to more information about fan made "mods" and alike for HOMM3. I've been a loyal player of H3 and H3 WOG for as long as I can remember.

However, when I try the VCMI today I encounter several issues

1) Game is in russian. Can not change by any of the mods. The problem comes when installing package: WoG
2) WoG options not available in game. Can not set up WoG as the button for WoG setup is not responding.
3) XXL maps from HOTA is not available. Is this something that will be implemented?

I've tried to find this information elsewhere, but with limited luck. Hope you have an answer for this. Good luck

1. Disable russian translation, which is WoG submod.
2. That's correct.
3. Game can load maps of any size, but HoTA maps are not supported yet. Hopefully some day they will.

Hi guys,
Changed computers and all the mess, finally decided to reinstall VCMI and try out 0.99!

I encounter a problem I didn't before, for a reason I couldn't identify I can't up the resolution, console tells me "Selected resolution 1920x1080 was not found! Falling back to 800x600"

I did install the Highres menu Mod from launcher though, I am sure it's something stupid from my side, any hint?

Try this trick: launch game in 800x600 setting (windowed, not full screen), next start any scenario, go to Options window, and there change resolution and click Full Screen button.

So, another 'trick'. Instal VCMI 0.99, try launch game. Then download last daily build and replace it over v0.99 files (not clean H3) and try again lauch game.

Hi there,

when I hit the download link I get redirected to dropbox offering a vcmi_099.rar. But that seems to be the windows version since its packed with dll and exe files.

I cannot find the 0.99 linux binaries, can you please tell for the blind and dumb where to find them?

I have downloaded vcmi 0.99 and am very happy so far. The random scenario actually works, and that is with me running 9 town mods!! I am now hoping for a working update to map editor, and have some things I would like to see in it if anyone would like constructive imput from an unskilled fan!!!

All in all I love VCMI and have already spent countless hours playing. Thank you to EVERYONE who has put in such wonderful work~

PS: One question. On Heroes Community site there are two wonderful looking projects, Romanian Town and Oasis Town. Anyone know how those are coming along for VCMI? I would be more than willing to volunteer my time to playtest them if needed.

Oasis is planned straight to VCMI version. Abour Romanian Town - first version was released for ERA platform and I assume that new version will be for ERA to. But event that, there's still possibility that someone make VCMI port of this town. And new towns are not the only interesting mods in development. New alternatives and New upgrades are interesting too!

At the moment the multiplayer system is very buggy so i recommend playing original heroes 3 instead with gameranger better than hamatchi :)

I am currently playing a 8 player hot seat game. If you save a lot it works fairly well, but you may have to reload quite a bit (In all fairness I had similar problem with the original game even before vcmi existed). Seems decent for the most part though. Compared to version 0.98 where I couldn't even get random scenario generator to work it's an awesome improvement~ congratz and kudos to developers!


As a side note I was curious as to how difficult it would be to add on a white player 9 and black player 10 (or visa versa or some other colors)....... I just figure since there are 10 main towns now, why not have 10 players.

It's been proposed many times and even some graphics were made.

It is in fact quite difficult to implement.

I missed that thread, but as I only speak and read English that might be why. :-P Another thing I like is with the random generator, the map has towns that aren't player towns on the map too, so it's possible to play more armies than 8 anyway. I actually have ideas for a scenario using the vcmi map editor 1024 x 1024 map that would utilize many town types. Some improvements need to happen in map editor first though, so its a back burner project atm.....I may set up a separate topic chain at a point in the near future to discuss as well.

Random maps are (and always have been) based on templatres. Of course there are no templates for more than 8 players, so it's another issue to overcome.

Think you might have misunderstood....when I said its possible to have more than 8 armies I only meant because a random town on a map will pull up from the available pools of towns in your game. Here for example I made a small map for two players. If you place player one as any town but castle, and player two as any town but tower, when the game starts it will start you with two towns, one castle and one the you chose for player one, then one tower and the one you chose for player two. Then if you recruit a hero and run him due south from between your two towns you will see various random towns...... hence by the time you have conquered all the towns you end up witm multiple armies....sometimes more than 8 types within one scenario.

I'm trying to launch VCMI_launcher.exe through wine on Linux. I currently have HD mod which is working great. However when I try to launch the VCMI I get the error:

"VCMI has crashed. We are sorry. File with information about encountered problem has been created."

Just so that it is in English, i do actually read Russian but very slowly so would prefer English. I tried to change fronts, delete the russian version in the Doc/wog folder, tried the russian translator in the laucher (bugs out and closes down)....

okay now it works, but for some reason the game crashes on launch when I launch in 1080p, Could this be the same problem that Adobe has on HiRez pc screens? I have a 4k touchscreen and no resolution works except the 800/600

Higher resolutions are available but you must enable VCMI essential files in launcher. WARNING: don't click update vcmi essential files. This feature must be enabled, only not updated.
